Many a times, things go wrong with freelancers because they enter the field unprepared. Freelancing can be very rewarding, but you cannot avoid the challenges you have to face as a freelancer. The common belief is that there is no boss. Whether full-time or part-time, self-employment is most tempting in freelancing profession. Some people believe it to be synonymous to “total freedom” which is partly true. Apart from this, people come with many misconceptions when they initially start with freelancing. We have put together a list of rules which a freelancer should follow:
Always Get The Payment
Make sure you get paid for your work. There is no fixed payment and it varies from one client to another. You will be given certain projects to complete and will be paid on the basis of these projects. As a freelancer you should demand for your payment after each project. Do not let the client postpone your payment. In case, your client does that do not trust him. You have the liberty to fire them.
Fix Your Rate Before Hand
As a regular office job there is no fixed salary. As a freelancer it is important to set your rate for your articles before you start your work. Your assignments will be delivered to you accordingly. You will be paid according to the projects you complete. Well, there is no hard rule for the payment. Make clear on what criteria are you working with your client. Ask whether will you be paid on hourly basis or on the number of projects you deliver.
Lack of communication always creates confusion in the work. So, there should be no communication gap between you and your client. Show him the sample of your work before beginning your work with him. You can also ask your client to show you his sample. Talk to him about the project and get all clarification about his expectation. Always ask about the target audiences, this will give to a better idea on how to approach your assignment.
Know Your Clients
In any other regular office job you meet your colleagues every day. Thus you have a better chance to maintain good relations with them. But it does not mean that as a freelancer you cannot maintain personal relations with your clients. Know your clients by visiting them personally. You should know them by their names to give impression of yours, and they will get back to you in near future. Even you clients should know your name. You can also indulge in personal talks other than your work to be more flexible with them. Do research on your clients before you sign projects with them. It is very important for you to know whether they are trustworthy or not as there is low visibility.
Be Bold To Negotiate
There is always the possibility to negotiate with your clients. You can negotiate on monetary issues, deadlines, your projects. Your negotiations can vary from client to client and project to project. So be bold to negotiate and do not take a back seat because negotiation is your right as an employee. But do not go unrealistic while making negotiation and also think from client’s point of view as well.
Learn To Say No
If you are an honest and hardworking person you will always be in the good books of your clients. Your work will always be demanded in the market. Your clients will always be there to take advantage of you. Always work on the basis of the terms and conditions signed by you. There are times when you will be offered very attractive offers, do not get tempted. Learn to say no, remember that you also have a personal life and other obligations.
Keep To Your Promise
It is very important to win the heart of your clients. Once you make a promise to your clients stick to it. Many a times, clients are not satisfied with your work and you get revisions. Make sure you give them completed work. Do not leave you projects in between this leaves a bad impression and the clients will never get back to you. As a freelancer you have to adhere to the deadlines.
Do not Get Attracted To Cheaper Rates
Freelancing is not an easy job as it requires a lot of hard work and creativity. If you are a creative person, your work will always be in demand. Do not get attracted to cheap offers as there are many clients who pay well to freelancers. You can wait till you get a nice offer. Do not let yourself exploited in the hands of cunning clients.
Be A Multi-Tasker
Freelancers are self employed people but it means they have to deal with all things single-handed. So they not only have to concentrate on mere creativity but they also have to search for their clients. Crazy deadlines, late working hours, nagging boss, monetary issues and personal problems all these things can make you mad. One should not give up easily, because freelancing can provide you with many rewards. There is always the flexibility of time and place.
Be Ready To Work Hard
Freelancing is considered lucrative because there is no boss. This belief is just partly true not completely. As a freelancer, you are working for your clients, so they are you bosses ultimately. You cannot make amendments in your work without their permission. The most peculiar thing about freelancing is meeting deadlines set by your clients. Adhering to the deadlines means working late at nights. There will be a lot of distraction which will halt your path and you have to fight with all these distractions. So, do not take freelancing as something very easy, it will be all hard work and nothing else.
