Learn New Skills
When you are a freelancer, you must have the attitude of a student always ready to learn and explore. A freelancer cannot afford to function in a rut and has to constantly rev up his skills in order to maintain his profile and be in the race. When you are working under normal conditions and are hard pressed for time you long for a free time so that you can join a course or attend workshops. Unfortunately, the longing never finds fulfillment. The downtime gives you sufficient hours to learn and explore. Use it to achieve what you always yearned to.
Follow up With Past Clients
Free time or downtime is a period when you can catch up with your past clients. Who knows you might find some work. Even if you don’t, it is always beneficial to stay in touch with people for whom you have worked before. They will appreciate your efforts and in case they have a project which you can handle they will definitely approach you for your services.
Update Your Portfolio
When was the last time you updated your profile on sites and otherwise? Looks like ages, isn’t it? This is the reality of a lot of freelancers. When you don’t have time and you are reminded of update notifications, you feel like altering everything but then again you are hard pressed for time and thus, the update remains a dream. Downtime offers you a great opportunity to make all the updates on all the sites and other platforms. So, go ahead and build up the “you” brand. You are bound to benefit from the exercise.
Research New Markets
When you hit a lull in your freelancing career, it is advisable to explore new markets and other working options. A freelancer, in most cases, is versatile by nature but due to the hectic nature of his job doesn’t get the time to explore this side of his personality. So, now is the time. Get going and plunge yourself into the waters that you haven’t still tasted. You may find incredible opportunities.
Downtime is not such a negative thing as it is made out to be. If you follow the tips that we have described above, you will never feel that you are undergoing a blank and unproductive phase in your career. Hard times come in the life of every individual and as a freelancer you must be hardy enough to take the downtime in your stride. There is no point in sitting near the table and keeping your eyes glued to the computer screen. It won’t serve any purpose. Go outside, get some fresh air and enjoy the free time that has come knocking at your door. There is a lot to be done. So, just do it.
